University of Toledo Medical Center

The University of Toledo Medical Center is affiliated with the University of Toledo, which is a public university in Toledo, Ohio. This teaching hospital has three hospitals that are all located on the University of Toledo Health Science Campus with a total of 320 beds in all three hospitals combined. The hospitals are the University Medical Center, a Rehabilitation Hospital, and the Kobacker Center that provides psychiatric care for children. The Medical Center was established in 1964 and was first called the Medical College of Ohio. About 2,000 students enroll in the programs offered at the University of Toledo Health Science Campus each year. These include the College of Medicine, College of Nursing, College of Health Sciences, College of Graduate Studies, and the College of Pharmacy.

Medical CenterThe University of Toledo Medical Center specializes in many different areas, including dentistry, adolescent services, family medicine, and many others. They have the only specialists in the area who perform atrial fibrillation ablation, and the facility was the site of the world’s first paired kidney exchange transplant. One of the Medical Center’s unique features is that they offer guaranteed appointments for patients who need to see orthopaedists, cardiologists, or surgeons within one day. The medical center offers very fast treatment for heart patients who need to have a blocked artery cleared with only 59 minutes from the time the patient enters the center until the catheter clears the blockage. Most hospitals and medical centers take 90 minutes to complete this procedure.

The Coghlin Rehabilitation Center, one of the three hospitals on the Medical Center campus, offers inpatient and outpatient brain injury rehabilitation and spinal cord care.  Stroke patients can receive excellent care since the facility focuses on caring for stroke patients. Children who are age 12 and up and adults can receive care at the rehabilitation programs offered at this hospital. Patients are treated for pain management, musculoskeletal problems, back and neck pain, and other conditions. The hospital offers specialty service for amputee and prosthetic needs, electrodiagnostic services, interventional spine procedures, and wheelchair seating.

Psychiatry is another specialty of the University of Toledo Medical Center, and one of the three hospitals that make up the medical center is devoted to psychiatry. This is the Kobacker Center that specializes in treating children and teens who have severe emotional troubles, such as thoughts of suicide, chronic depression, and intense anger. The Center works with other mental health boards in northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan. The Medical Center offers an Adult Psychiatry Outpatient Clinic for patients and their families. The Behavioral Medicine Clinic helps patients with stress reduction techniques like biofeedback, relaxation, and psychotherapy. Psychiatric disorders are also treated at the General Adult Clinic.

Since the University of Toledo Medical Center is a research hospital, there is a strong emphasis on research and education at the facility. The Jacobson Center for Clinical & Translational Research focuses on both traditional research and interdisciplinary research at the university. Health care workers can also complete continuing education requirements at the Jacobson Center. Its location is in the Center for Creative Education building on the Health Science Campus at the University of Toledo. Research topics are available in several types of cancer, HIV/AIDS, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, Rheumatology, Stroke, and several others.

The University of Toledo Medical Center is definitely a modern medical facility that offers top medical care to those who live in Toledo and in surrounding areas.
